Located at 21 South End Avenue, Battery Park Montessori is New York’s first trilingual Montessori school offering Spanish, Mandarin, and English language immersive experiences. Montessori-trained teachers nurture each child’s social, emotional, cognitive, academic, and physical needs, fostering independence, natural curiosity, and problem-solving abilities. Our newly expanded space provides an excellent learning environment for our Nursery Ones programs.

In an authentic Montessori program, the child, environment and teacher create a learning triangle. Dr. Maria Montessori and researchers since have found that when children work in such environments – ones where the parameters are clear and where teachers respect children’s developmental differences and interests – there is a sense of trust, which allows deep concentration and learning to take place. At Battery Park Montessori, we pay close attention to how we foster these skills in our children. We often discuss the nature of the materials and how we could present them so to maximize a child’s stamina and concentration for we recognize that skills such as attention and sustained focus are paramount to a child’s learning. As we celebrate our 10-year anniversary, we have secured a neighboring space in addition to our current campus location - all for yet another decade! This allows us to not only serve siblings of current students, but also welcome a new generation of students to come. We are committed to continuing to grow in our one of a kind neighborhood with patio space on the waterfront that enables our children to stay grounded in their natural environment. Trilingual Montessori Language Program

The teaching and learning of languages is also towards that end. Learning more than one language, particularly during a child’s sensitive period to sounds, has a profound effect on the plasticity of a child’s brain. The back and forth between sounds promotes the categorization of those sounds within the brain and enhances mental flexibility. Like a muscle, the more one “toggles” back and forth between languages, the stronger the muscle gets. These repeated opportunities for practice allows for both language and executive function skills to become sharper.

Trilingual Learning

As Maria Montessori’s observations and current brain research has shown, children’s sensitive period to language is from 0 to 6 years old. Their brains are open to absorbing new information of all kinds – especially new languages.

Our trilingual language program complements a young child’s natural predisposition to new sounds and rhythms. At Battery Park Montessori, we expose our children to both Mandarin and Spanish with Montessori trained, native language speaking teachers in each classroom throughout the day, every day. In this way, all of our students benefit from both immersive instruction and daily exposure to Mandarin and Spanish.

With teachers in all languages present, children are encouraged to interact and express themselves in all languages on a daily basis. Children learn from Montessori-trained teachers who are native Spanish and Mandarin speakers and who fully engage the children in daily conversations, singing, and vocabulary. Lesson content in math, geography, practical life, and more are also delivered in Mandarin and Spanish in the form of classical Montessori education.

Preschool through Kindergarten children are in a receptive and explosive stage of learning. Maria Montessori called this phenomenon the period of the “absorbent mind.” The "absorbent mind" refers to the brain’s capacity to take in information and sensations from the world that surrounds it and create meaning from them. Three to six year olds are eager to self-construct knowledge, skills, and social graces through hands-on learning and community interactions.

The Casa (preschool through kindergarten) classroom is a specially designed environment rich with materials that serve to meet and enhance the natural learning tendencies of children between the ages of 3-6. The classroom is beautifully and specifically laid out in a precise manner that invites children to discover and interact with the materials that are designed to encourage understanding and mastery.

In addition to facilitating cross-cultural communication, speaking more than one language also positively affects cognitive abilities. Researchers have shown that the bilingual brain can have better attention and task-switching capacities than the monolingual brain, thanks to its developed ability to inhibit one language while using another. Learning in English and target language every day deepens and strengthens a student's language, math, and science skills.
